b-sides

The term “B-Side” is derived literally from “side b” of a vinyl single. When 7-inch vinyl singles were common, “side a” ordinarily contained the hit, “side b” the alternative track; “the reach”, if you will.

A B-Side, as seen by the likes of goof & gremmie, is defined as any studio produced track that has been made available to fans, yet has become difficult to procure due to both time elapsed since first-issue and the tracks’ elusiveness on singles, soundtracks, or compilations.

More on B-Sides below:

B-sides are different from unreleased material, outtakes and demos.

“Unreleased material” is work that usually isn’t released to the general public. On rare occasions, particularly for reissues, these songs are in fact placed on albums, often with that description after it.

“Outtakes” are songs recorded for an album but, either for technical or artistic purposes, not included in the released album. They occasionally appear on reissues of albums, billed as “bonus tracks”. R.E.M.’s album Dead Letter Office, for example, is a collection of outtakes from previous albums that were later released as b-sides to various singles.

“Demos” are early versions of songs which, like “unreleased material”, seldom see the light of day. Demos of songs often have additional or alternative verses. Often more demos than full songs are recorded, as an artist goes back and retools what is already present.

i remember getting the ‘given to fly’ cassette single. i immediately thought ‘leatherman’ was one of the coolest sounding jams i’d ever heard. needless to say, i not only enjoyed collecting bootlegs, but making really bootleg versions of bootlegs for my friends. i took the ‘gtf’ cardboard sleeve, cut it, took all my pj bootlegs and albums, recorded the choice bits onto a blank tape, hand wrote in exquisite script the song titles on the back of the cardboard sleeve, housed it in an old school black cassette case, called it “THE GREATEST PEARL JAM MIX EVER” and gave it to my best friend before i left for college. he took the tape with him to florida for an internship, played it all the time, took road trips cranking it at full blast, generally using it the way i intended it to be used. sometimes when he played it, people told him, “THIS IS THE GREATEST PEARL JAM MIX EVER.” anyway, he took a road trip and left the tape in a rent-a-car. i can only hope whoever found it put it to good use. anyway, i guess you’d call this my PJ20 reminiscence. here’s to the greatest band, live show, and fans in the world. gremmie.net rules.

From what I am seeing, “The Golden State” was from the 2008 Christmas single. Is that the demo version or the studio version?

If it’s the studio version that’s the Christmas single, where did the demo surface?

If it’s the demo version that’s the Christmas single, where did they release the studio version?

    22. berenlazarus says:

There are two versions of “Alone” listed, one of which is from the “Go” single. Where is the other version from?

All the versions of “Against the ’70s” fades out and then back and cuts out mid-song. Was it that way on the album?
